Streetsboro High School
Southeast High School
The Southeast Pirates (1-1-1) defeated the Streetsboro Rockets(2–1-2) 3-2 Thursday night in their home opener, handing the Rockets their first loss of the year. The Pirates started fast, with freshman Mark Presley scoring the opening goal nine minutes in by charging a clearance by the Rocket’s goalkeeper, and causing a deflection into the goal. Battling back, Streetsboro continued to pressure the Pirate defense, eventually converting a corner kick with 20 minutes to go in the half to tie the game at 1-1, a score which would stand to the second half. Like the Pirates in the first half, the Rockets started quickly in the second. Streetsboro’s Bailey Deevers charged down the goal line and netted home the go ahead go for the Rockets seven minutes into the second half.
Holding strong, the Pirates defense led by Juniors Jack Romocean and Xerxes Smith fought off chance after chance to keep the Rockets from extending their lead. With 24 minutes to go, Junior Garrett Dietz rocketed home a shot from outside the box into the top netting to tie the game. Minutes later, Streetsboro would get fouled inside the Pirate box and was awarded a penalty kick. With the game on the line, Southeast Goalkeeper Sam Ballentine made a diving save to keep the game level. After many chances by both teams and with the game coming to a close, Garrett Dietz stormed through the Rocket defense and was fouled to draw a penalty for the Pirates. With four minutes on the clock, Senior Alex Blicher sent home the game-winning penalty shot for the Pirates. The win protects the Pirates’ home field, and brings their record to 1-1-1.
